"
Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them... These are the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other side Jordan, by. Jericho, eastward. But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them. (Joshua 13:14, 32-33).
" +
"
Christian society is abuzz with the notice that—especially during a financial crisis—God has an inheritance for his people, all they have to do is get it. In fact, one song encourages Christians to "Get your inheritance!" referencing the promise that God gave to Abraham. There is an inheritance for the people of God. It does not come in the ways that people think it would come. For most, the assumption is that God's promise of an inheritance is that everything in our lives is prosperous. Indeed, I believe that God's plan is for us to experience prosperity everywhere. Yet, this prosperity looks a bit differently than what we expected. Our expectations are continually let down because we are seeking things from God that God did not promise us. We, as priests and kings unto God, after the order of Jesus Christ, are called like the Levites to receive an inheritance. But just like the Levites, our inheritance is the Lord himself.
" +
"
Many people are confused about coming into Christianity about exactly what Christianity offers. Christianity offers us a way to come into relationship with the true and living God. However, this may seem dissatisfactory to many people. Why doesn't God save us to give us money? Why doesn't God save us to give us houses, lands, and cars? It seems that this is equivalent to what the other tribes received. They received a tangible inheritance that had the semblance of prosperity that Abraham had. However, the priests, those sanctified to God, did not receive any of this. God chose the Levites to receive himself as their inheritance. Christians must be comfortable with this fact: God is our inheritance. There may be some things that we will get along the way. We may need some physical blessings as we live in this world. God will provide these things, but the point of our salvation, the point of God's bringing us to himself, was not for these things. God saved us to bring us into covenant with him, for us to inherit his presence among us for all eternity.
" +
"
For this reason, like the Levites, we never have a reason to complain. All of these things we experience, all of the things that happen to us, are temporary. Our goal is to experience the divine presence of God, to be one with it. When we come to salvation in Christ, we initiate this process. God places his Spirit in us because he guarantees that if we walk in the Spirit that we will never see death. We will only experience the life that he has promised. This life is a life filled with his presence. It is not about eternal bliss or eternal happiness. To say this misses the point about our salvation. Our salvation is a real salvation. It is God's way of bringing us away from the bondage of nothingness, abandonment that is guaranteed to us through disobedience. We need to realize the fullness of what we have been offered. It is not an opportunity to get richer. Riches can go away. An eternal relationship is just that, eternal. It enables us to experience God and allows us to see his face and live. Without this relationship, we are doomed. That's how important God is to us. We must recognize without him, we are nothing, and ultimately, without this relationship we become nothing.
";
